US support for the fight against poaching in Tanzania

Tanzania and the United States on Monday (February 4th) signed a memorandum of understanding outlining terms of US support for the fight against poaching, Tanzania's Daily News reported.

Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism Khamis Kagasheki and Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Interior David Hayes signed the memorandum in Dar es Salaam, agreeing that the US government will provide technical support to Tanzania in its anti-poaching efforts.

"The natural resources that the country is abundantly blessed with should benefit all Tanzanians, and this is part of the steps to ensure that this is realised," Kagasheki said.

The agreement is expected to benefit the tourism sector, with a cash-for-work programme targeting five wildlife management areas, including Ikona, Burunge, Enduimet, Mbomipa and Ipole. The programme will educate local residents in branding and marketing, training scouts and developing a co-ordinated monitoring system.

The two countries are also planning a joint anti-poaching conference in Tanzania to address elephant rescue and protection, Kagasheki said.
