Blaauwbosch Private Game Reserve - News
Karoo, Eastern Cape, South Africa
The hippo project was started 2 years ago when we located a dam in the area referred to as "Seekoei Gat". After further research, it was evident that hippo did once occur in the area, but had been forced out through hunting or agricultural development. We continually strive to re-introduce species which once occupied our area under strict conservation management principles to ensure a sustained natural eco system.
As an initial habitation and acclimatization process, they have been released into an enclosed area on the property and supplement fed until such time that they are settled and we are certain of their healthy condition; managed at all times in the best interests of conservation. Indications are that they are settling well, leaving the coolness of the dam late afternoon/early evening to feed – and certainly adding a new dimension to our guests game viewing experience.
